IEEE Begins Work on Cyber Security Standard for Electric Utilities

20 April – The IEEE Standards Association has initiated development of a new standard to help utilities retrofit their communications systems to protect against cyber attack and other security threats. IEEE-SA has also begun work on a standard that will give utilities uniform engineering design methods and practices for minimizing or preventing lightning damage to communications equipment. Awards from IEEE Spectrum Honor Innovative Technologies

18 April – The 2006 IEEE Spectrum / EE Times Annual Creativity in Electronics Awards were presented earlier this month in San Jose, Calif., in conjunction with the Embedded Systems Conference sponsored by CMP Media. The 2006 IEEE Spectrum ACE Award for Technology in the Service of Society was presented to American Superconductor and the Tennessee Valley Authority for the development of the Superconducting Synchronous Condensor (SuperVAR), which is designed to avoid wide-spread power grid collapses; the 2006 IEEE Spectrum ACE Award for Emerging Technology went to IBM, Sony and Toshiba for the Cell Microprocessor – cited as “the technology offering the greatest potential for financial success.”

4 April – Released in a downloadable PDF format, IEEE-USA has published three new eBooks:

*The Reliability of the Electric Transmission Infrastructure in the 21st Century, An Analysis: The Energy Policy Act of 2005;
*The State of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Implementation and Its Policy Implications;
*Interoperability for the National Health Information Network (NHIN).
